You Might Be More Ready for an MES Than You Think

In my experience speaking with customers over the years, many manufacturers ask some version of the same question: How do I know if my company is ready to implement a Manufacturing Execution System (MES)?

It’s a fair question. Implementing an MES is not a small change. It affects how work is defined, controlled, executed, inspected, and improved. Yet many manufacturers frame the question the wrong way. They believe they need to reach a certain level of process maturity—standardized work instructions, consistent data collection, and defined escalation paths—before implementing an MES. An MES shouldn’t be viewed as a reward for maturity, but rather as a tool that helps manufacturers progress to the next level.

Do our processes need to be mature before implementing an MES?

No. I’ve found that many manufacturers often mistake being under-tooled for being immature. 

For example, most manufacturers already have an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system. Over time, many try to stretch it into an “MES-lite.” The problem is that an ERP simply wasn’t built to provide the level of control, traceability, and embedded quality that an MES was designed for.

Another assumption is that you need product lifecycle management (PLM) software in place before you can evaluate an MES. This isn’t necessarily true either. I’ve supported plenty of customers who have computer aided design (CAD) or product data management (PDM), or neither, and achieve tremendous ROI from leading with an MES implementation. The right path depends on the individual business, but the PLM question should not automatically freeze the MES conversation.

That said, most manufacturers already have the foundation they need to get started. If you have a product to build, clear business goals, and leadership support, you’re likely in a good position to begin the conversation.

Do we need standardized processes before we implement an MES?

No, not necessarily. It can be helpful, but it’s not required.

Having some standardized processes in place could potentially shorten your implementation timeline, but they don’t need to be perfectly refined before going into an MES. In reality, MES implementation is often the time period when those processes get defined, cleaned up, and controlled. You just need the willingness to define them.

For example, if you’re relying on tribal knowledge and paper documentation, your processes already exist. They are just living in someone’s head or in a spreadsheet. An MES gives you a place to capture and retain that knowledge, turning it into something repeatable and accessible by everyone. 

Can we use an MES if we are still paper-based?

Yes, many manufacturers are still working from paper, and it’s not a barrier to starting the MES conversation.

Digital work instructions are not a prerequisite to an MES, and the same goes for paper-based drawings, models, and engineering data. You need enough stability between engineering, production, and quality to build and inspect against something real. Converting from paper to a controlled digital process is often part of the maturity journey, but not a condition for beginning it. 

How does MES accelerate process maturity?

One step at a time.

Implementing an MES forces teams to define routings, capture tribal knowledge, digitize instructions, manage revisions, and build quality into the process. Those are behaviors you would expect from a mature manufacturer.

Picture an escalator. Once you put one foot on, the second foot eventually has to follow. An MES creates that same momentum, pulling the organization toward a more controlled, repeatable, data-driven execution.

So, are you ready for an MES?

You might be.

If you’re asking whether you’re ready for an MES, there’s a good chance you’re already trying to solve the problems it was designed to address. You’re trying to scale production, reduce reliance on tribal knowledge, improve traceability, or build with the same resources but with greater control and consistency.

The better question is, “What are we trying to improve, and do we have the support to begin that journey?”
